The summer of 2017, a friend convinced me to give this weird way of eating a try. At this point in my life, I had 6 kids and gained about 10-20 lbs per pregnancy. But I loved vegetables and felt that my diet was well balanced. I thought I just needed to exercise more (partially true). I didn’t know much about this trendy diet, and I really despise trendy diets. So I gave it a try. I’d heard of and saw friends have success cutting carbs, so this didn’t seem to be too bad.

I realized very quickly that there was way more to this diet than ‘eat this, not that’. Eating the things we’ve been told were bad for us and avoiding the things that were deemed healthy seemed so wrong! I’m the curious type and had to know all the whys, hows, and whats about everything keto. I followed bloggers and YouTubers like Dr. Berg, Thomas DeLauer, KetoConnect. Ask Nurse Cindy, and more. It was then that I embraced a paradigm shift in my approach to food. You CAN lose weight while eating healthy fats and avoiding whole grains. I was doing it! I lost 13lbs in my first week and continued to lose 1-5 lbs every week for the next 18 months. I lost a total of 85lbs! I went from 245lbs to 160lbs.

Here are some of the things I learned along the way:

  • Cravings are a very mental battle, and way less physical than we think.

  • Friends with similar goals make the journey easier

  • Meals don’t have to be fancy or expensive. I can cook my family of 8 a keto meal for $15-20.

  • Rate of research correlates to rate of success. The more you know/learn about the ketogenic diet, the better you are at it.

  • Not everyone will understand or agree with you. It’s ok, they can be wrong.

  • You must know yourself. Be honest with yourself about your relationship with food. Prepare (mentally) for your own weaknesses.

  • When overwhelmed with all the learning and label reading, just to the next right thing. Be patient with yourself as you learn.

  • Don’t make excuses for poor choices.

  • It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle. If you treat it like a diet, you will gain the weight back.

  • It’s not lose weight to get healthy, it’s get healthy to lose weight. -Dr. Berg

  • Keto did way more for me than weight loss. I gained mentally clarity, lost my depression, gained confidence, lost achy knees/feet, gained awareness of how my body responds to food, stopped have sugar crashes (I’m pretty sure I was pre-diabetic), and so much more that would be TMI.

I love hearing others’ keto stories! Next time you visit me at the bakery, share yours with me!
